Week Notes W17-25
Things are finally working now! Over the past several weeks, I’ve been preoccupied with setting up my Framework 16 Laptop. Or rather, I was reworking a lot of my personal workflows, kinda like a tech-oriented spring cleaning.
- I rebuilt my software stack from being Windows-based to one that’s Linux oriented. It’s been years since I last used NixOS, and all my old configs were too dated. But switching systems was also an excuse to learn about flakes.
- A lot of my day-to-day application software hasn’t changed at all. It’s still basically just Emacs, and I didn’t need to update my config too much from Windows-land. The performance now is so much faster in all aspects, too. It’ll be hard to ever switch back.
- For “Work” work, I’ll try to keep around a Windows guest VM. It looks like it’ll be adequate; the performance and latency seems fine, especially after I set up all the guest (virtio) drivers.
- The Framework 16 itself is really nice. I like the large, high refresh rate screen, and the extra buttons on the RGB macropad are useful. Unfortunately, the battery life is dismal and the panel under my right wrist creaks. The size and weight are fine. This machine reminds me of my old Thinkpad W520, which still ranks highly as one of my all time favorite laptops.
- In other non-tech news, our house and all our window sills are now decorated with geodes and gemstones of all shapes and colors. They look really nice, but I think K kinda went overboard.
