What I'm doing now

This is my now page, last updated December 2025.

It’s been ages since my last update (March 2025)!

Family
Folks are getting older but still generally healthy. K is doing well and our two bunnies, Xiaohei and Moe, are settled in their elderly ways. We still give them twice-daily medications, nebulization, and lots of vet recheck appointments, but otherwise they’re happy rabbits. Unsurprisingly, our pet insurance plan’s coverage got cut to basically nothing, but over the lifetime of all our rabbits, I think we’re way ahead.
Technology
Tons of explorations and side projects in this space, at work and for side projects. Fortunately, I picked up a Framework Desktop before RAM prices exploded so I’ve had a box suitable for playing with local LLMs. Been having a blast figuring it all out, the most satisfying thing is having the space and time to just wander through topics. Learning is fun!

I moved more of my home IT setup to NixOS flakes. I host my LLMs through llama.cpp and llama-swap, chat via a self-hosted Open WebUI instance, and settled on using a mix of ECA in Emacs and Charmbracelet’s Crush as my agentic CLI tool of choice. Qwen3-Coder seems to be okay. Nothing local comes close to hosted offerings, of course, but it’s fun to play around. I’ve also been migrating more of my systems over to OSS equivalents, my project for the next year will be to replace my aging Synology NAS with something else, haven’t decided on what yet.

Reading and Watching
I haven’t been reading or watching much of anything notable lately. I think I’m just collecting series for my backlog, but like everything else, I’m not actually chipping away at it. Maybe someday, but if I’m not drawn to it enough, that’s probably a sign.
Playing
Yup, a few months ago I cut out all gacha games. My Arknights and ZZZ accounts are gathering dust, and I’m freed of that nagging feeling of doing my dailies. I might boot up Arknights again to catch up on the story, but it’ll be a project; I want to see if I can get it running on my NixOS laptop.
Food and Cooking
I’ve gotten pretty good at our electric smoker, it’s the best we can do given HOA constraints. My latest kitchen toy is a pizza steel; I used to have a baking stone ages ago, so this isn’t totally new to me. Getting back into breads and experimenting with pizza dough formulations is also pretty fun, but I still gotta do something about all those carbs. Sigh.
